Absence Letters
The school has a statutory duty to write to parents regarding children whose attendance has fallen below 90%. There are model letters and a series of actions for the school to undertake at different stages. This is not the choice of the school but a statutory procedure. In line with the school's strand of compassion and our relational approach, we try to do this with an understanding of individual circumstances, childhood illnesses and other issues that prevent attendance.
The headteacher and the school's PFSA meet regularly to look at attendance data and discuss which families are at which stage of the process. Class teachers also meet with the Headteacher and PFSA half-termly to talk about children who are considered vulnerable due to a lack of attendance. These meetings between staff ensure everyone knows the children and families involved and to ensure help is offered in a timely manner.
Where possible, the Head Teacher will phone parents of children who have been highlighted as meeting the criteria for an attendance letter to ensure a reational approach and to discuss another support or help that is needed.
