Visit to France June 2011
Mrs Sleeman and Mrs Shakesby went to visit our French link school in Gravenchon. We had an early start from Street (5.30am) and got in Le Havre at lunchtime. We spent 2 days visiting different schools and saw children aged three to nine. The school day starts at 8.30am and finishes at 4.30pm. The children sit at desks and from the age of six these desks are in rows or pairs. In the afternoon the younger children who are three all have a sleep on little beds. There are no interactive white boards and much of the work is done in work books or on work sheets. The children have phonics lessons just as we do. They do not wear school uniform and the teachers who visited Hindhayes thought our children looked very smart in their blue sweatshirts. All the children eat school meals and they don’t have the choices we do. Their lunch break is one and a half hours to enable the children to all walk to the place where they eat together. In the playgrounds they have apparatus like ours and a large undercover area so they stay out to play even when it is raining hard! We are setting up a webcam in September so that the children in Ecole Marie Curie can teach each year group in our school a French song and we will teach them an English one. It was a wonderful experience and the Headteacher Antoine Delauney is hoping to visit us next year and bring some children over.
