Reading Schemes
Hindhayes uses a carefully selected and organised collection of high quality reading books to ensure that children have access to a variety of texts to support the development of decoding and comprehension. At Hindhayes we are committed to providing a reading journey for children that is based on a high quality approach to to the teaching of phonics which leads to children gaining meaning from text more rapidly as reading becomes fluent adn ensures that children gain pleasure from reading. The main reading spine of books that children will start their home reading journey with is Dandelion Readers. This series of books follows the sequence of sounds teachers are covering in class and so provide a seamless link between learning and practice of reading. These books are supplemented by Phonics Bug, Sounds-Write, Jelly and Bean, Rigby, Oxford Reading Tree (A Variety of schemes from this publisher). Reading schemes that promote reading and comprehension for children are the ones listed above and in addition Sunshine Spiral Starters, Story Worlds, Lighthouse, Cambridge Reading and Puffin. As children master end of Year 2 reading expectations as outlines in the National Curriculum they will be given access to short chapter books from a variety of high quality authors such as Roald Dahl, David Walliams, Jill Murphy, Jill Tomlinson, Robert Lewis, Dr Suess.
